Why map before you automate?

A process map makes the work visible before a tool is chosen. It shows the trigger, actions, decisions, handoffs, owners, and exceptions that a reliable design must account for.
What to include
Keep the first map bounded to one flow and one outcome. Record the current steps, the information used, the decision points, the people involved, and where work is delayed or re-entered. Then mark the smallest change worth testing.
